BPG U11s had two matches scheduled last weekend, but the weather gods were against us on Friday when a cloudburst meant our friendly against Hampton Wick CC U9B was abandoned before a ball was bowled. We will reschedule as soon as possible though, as there are some sibling rivalries to address in this fixture!
On Saturday, the clouds were still hovering, but the league fixture against Old Actonians went ahead with fingers crossed. BPG lost the toss and was put in to bat, with our reliable openers Erin (19 runs not out) and Eve (9 for 1 wicket lost), getting the girls off on a good (quick) foot. Libby (10 for 1 w) and Isabel (5 not out) carried the momentum, with Rosie (15 for 2 w) and Eleanor (8 not out), and vice-captain Evie (12 not out) and Beth (7 not out) setting a strong total. Captain Imogen (14 not out) and Lizzie (13 for 1 w) finished off the batting to set a strong target of 287.
As the girls headed in the field, the drizzle started, making bowling conditions challenging with a wet ball. However, the girls rose to the challenge and powered through the rain to put in a sterling effort across the board. Wickets fell as quickly as the raindrops, with 6 of our bowlers getting wickets (including 1 each for Libby, Isabel and Rosie) and stand-out performances by Evie (5 runs conceded off 2 overs and 3 wickets), Erin (11 runs off 3 overs and 3 wickets), Imogen (9 runs off 3 overs and 1 wicket) and Eve (6 runs off 3 overs). This, coupled with a very tight effort from the fielders, meant BPG secured their first league win by 62 runs.
All of the girls can be very proud of their individual and team performances. The running and calling between the wickets was disciplined and all-round bowling and batting skills have improved tremendously. The air may have been damp, but BPG spirits were not! Let’s keep it up, girls – we face Ealing next…
As always, a big thank you to our parent helpers – Jack for scoring and Michael for umpiring on a very soggy wicket – and supporters who braved the elements to cheer the girls to victory.
